As a creative, AI tools drive me insane because they do all of the fun work, rather than do the small things I wish they could do.
I've shared a zillion times to friends and family why I'm not a fan of AI, but something that I don't hear mentioned much is that the tools do not help in producing original works that can be refined towards a creator's vision.
Most of the time folks get what the machine spits out and say "that's good enough" and move on because most folks don't have the tools or skill to fix the glaring faults it generates.
My issue with that it's redefining what it means to truly MAKE something. Typing prompts and it spitting out a shinny turd, does not mean something was created. It's wishful creativity. Here's an example to illustrate my point.
I LOVE music, and wish I could make songs, but I haven't had the opportunity or time to learn basic music theory. But my mind keeps coming up with tunes and melodies that I can't figure out how to capture to play them. I've annoyed musicians I know including my kids and I am realizing that what I'm imagining ain't as easy to decipher musically.
I found some tools that allow me to hum notes to see if I can figure out how to play them, but the tools keep making it's own glossy music that are "inspired" by my humming but is making it's own piece.
As a creative person, I HATE it because I don't want it to figure out what chords to play and how to make it perfect. I want to figure that out and make my own choices in the process. But the machine is great at creating the "illusion of competence" to make me feel like I am making something. In reality it's just using my info to give me the illusion of choice in the attempts to reward my brain into thinking I created something.
But I didn't.
I just hummed some sounds.Imagine a world where that's what constitute as creativity.
Humans being inputs for the machine.
I personally don't like that thought.
